IPA is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) and is in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations. ECOSOC is the principal organ to coordinate the economic and social work of the United Nations and the specialised agencies and institutions that make up the UN 'family', e.g. UNESCO, WHO, IMF and many others. IPA is also associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI).

Sharon Altendorf is the full-time IPA NGO representative based in New York. Her work includes:

  • being an active member of committees organized by the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Status with ECOSOC, e.g. NGO Committee on Social Development; Working Group on Girls; Sub-committee on Eradication of Poverty; Commission on the Status of Women; NGO Committee on the UN International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples
  • attending the regular UN DPI briefings for NGOs given by Senior UN officials and Member State Delegates
  • attending and participating in United Nations meetings following our focus areas.

IPA has designated representatives for each of the main centres where UN meetings are held, i.e. New York, Geneva and Vienna, and as well, designated regional representatives.
