IPA is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) and is in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations. ECOSOC is the principal organ to coordinate the economic and social work of the United Nations and the specialised agencies and institutions that make up the UN 'family', e.g. UNESCO, WHO, IMF and many others. IPA is also associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI).

Fatima Rodrigo pbvm is the full-time IPA NGO representative based in New York. Her work includes:

  • being an active member of committees organized by the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Status with ECOSOC, e.g. NGO Committee on Social Development; Working Group on Girls; Sub-committee on Eradication of Poverty; Commission on the Status of Women; NGO Committee on the UN International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples
  • attending the regular UN DPI briefings for NGOs given by Senior UN officials and Member State Delegates
  • attending and participating in United Nations meetings following our focus areas.

IPA has designated representatives for each of the main centres where UN meetings are held, i.e. New York, Geneva and Vienna, and as well, designated regional representatives.

2009 Dates

The International Presentation Association Sisters of the Presentation NGO will participate in the following Commissions, Forums and Events in 2009, and is seeking the involvement of Presentation Sisters and Associates in our preparation:

  • UN DSPD Logo4-13 February in New York - Commission for Social Development (CSocD) 47th Session. Theme: Social Integration. This Commission for Social Development consists of 46 members elected by ECOSOC that meets once a year in New York. It is the main UN body which works on the implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action. More info ...
  • UN DAW Logo2-13 March in New York - Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) 53rd Session. Priority Theme: The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS. Review Theme: Equal participation of women and men in decision-making processes at all levels. The main goal of the CSW is to promote the implementation of equal rights between the sexes. The CSW prepares recommendations and reports to ECOSOC on promoting women’s rights in political, economic, civil, social, and educational fields. It also makes recommendations for urgent matters of women’s rights that require immediate attention. The CSW is comprised of 45 elected members, and meets once a year for ten days. More info ...

  • UNFF Logo20 April - 1 May in Geneva - United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) 8th session. In October 2000 the Economic and Social Council established the United Nations Forum on Forests, a subsidiary body with the main objective to promote “…the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and to strengthen long-term political commitment to this end…”.

  • 20 April - 1 May in New York - Committee on Migrant Workers (CMW) 10th Session. Country Reports: Azerbaijan (I), Colombia (I). The Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW) is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families by its State parties. It is the newest treaty body which held its first session in March 2004. More info ...
  • UN CSD Picture4-15 May in New York - Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) 17th Session. Themes: Agriculture, Rural Development, Land, Drought, Desertification and Africa. The CSD functions in two-year cycles which consist of one year of review and one of policy. In each cycle the thematic clusters of issues will be addressed in an integrated manner, taking into account economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. The CSD encourages member States to provide national reports, on a voluntary basis, that reflect on progress made in the areas under consideration. More info ...
  • UNPFII Logo18-29 May in New York - Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) 8th Session. The Permanent Forum (comprising 16 members elected for 3 years) is an advisory body to the Economic and Social Council with a mandate to discuss Indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights. According to its mandate, the Permanent Forum will:
    • provide expert advice and recommendations on Indigenous issues to the Council, as well as to programmes, funds and agencies of the United Nations, through the Council
    • provide expert advice and recommendations on Indigenous issues to the Council, as well as to programmes, funds and agencies of the United Nations, through the Council
    • raise awareness and promote the integration and coordination of activities related to Indigenous issues within the UN system
    • prepare and disseminate information on Indigenous issues. More info ...


United Nations Events

A World Conference is usually held each year dealing with a certain theme. Preparatory Sessions are held in New York USA, Switzerland and other countries to prepare for the World Summit. ECOSOC representatives, other PBVMs and Associates have a right to participate as consultants.

Special Sessions are held to deal with critical issues affecting some part or all of the global community, e.g.:

Other UN meetings include those of the Human Rights Commission which are usually held in Geneva on such issues as:

    • Rights of children
    • Religious tolerance
    • Refugees

Other UN meetings held in New York include:

    • General Assembly meetings.
